New exhibition 'it's not funny'

I have been invited to make work for an upcoming show entitled 'It's not funny' at the MAP gallery, Leeds.

The show starts 28th Jan and will last one week.

Here is a description of my work and art ethics written by one of the show's curators Gaia Rosenberg Colorni...

"Modern painting tradition: extremely serious stuff. For decades, the notion of modernism as a quest for deep ‘truths’ has been inculcated in the public’s general conception of art as a whole. With postmodernism, however, the idea of painting, especially abstract painting, as a means to achieve ultimate ‘purity’ was questioned, rejected, and ultimately ridiculed.

It is now easy to laugh at a young artist when told about now out fashioned aspirations of spiritual elevation and profound expression. Perhaps too easy to be dismissed at first sight. Green’s practice makes a central discourse of his own personal struggle to communicate genuine ‘moments’ to his audience, using semi-abstract painting to create a paradox: not only could we initially laugh to ourselves at the artist’s apparently naive attempts of communication, but also we laugh out loud at the content of his messages.

Through the crude, 'in-your-face' textual transposition of the artist’s thoughts and feelings onto the canvas, the audience interfaces with aesthetic compositions of spontaneously laid out paintbrush marks as well as witty, uncensored written language. The juxtaposition of the two is raw, clever, beautiful, grotesque, and remarkably hilarious at the same time. The artist's search for ‘purity’ re-emerges as something playful and shareable rather than serious and alienating, becoming obvious and subtly ironic at the same time.

For “It’s Not Funny”, Green has been invited to create a site-specific piece crossing the frontier between artistic creation and curatorial intervention, reflecting on the theme of humour (and non-humour) in art and within the gallery environment."
